Game of
the Night
Jared Bednar has a perfect NHL coaching
record so far. Though 2 games are a very small sample size, keep in mind that
the new coach for Colorado has never played nor coached in the NHL. He appears
to be a very fast learner though. He led the Lake Erie Monsters to a Calder Cup
in the AHL last season, so he already has some credibility.
In a very tight and even game, the
Avalanche defeated the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins in overtime,
handing them their first loss of this regular season. Pittsburgh quickly jumped
to a 2-0 lead, but ran into penalty trouble near the end of the 1st.
On a 5-on-3 advantage, Jarome Iginla cut the Penguin lead in half. Shortly
after the 2nd penalty expired, Colorado tied the game and began to
steal the momentum.
By the time the 2nd period
started, it was clear that life had been sucked out of the building. Though the
2nd 20 minutes were scoreless, it appeared the Avalanche were on the
brink of breaking the tie. They appeared to score, but the goal was immediately
called back due to a distinct kicking motion. Midway through the 3rd,
it was Pittsburgh’s turn to have a goal called back. Colorado successfully challenged
the play for goalie interference and it still remained tied at 2.
Pittsburgh finally broke through when
Trevor Daley scored a power play goal to put the Penguins up 3-2. In their
refusal to give in, Colorado looked to their captain to get some work done.
Gabriel Landeskog scored both the game-tying goal and OT game-winning goal to
cap off an exciting and very closely contested game.
