Game of
the Night
In a highly anticipated matchup, Oilers
captain Connor McDavid was pitted against 1st overall pick Auston
Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs at Air Canada Center. Though none of the
young superstars scored any points, it was still a very memorable game.
The Leafs tallied first at 1:29 of the
1st period when Connor Brown fed Nazem Kadri, who was stationed in
front of the net. Toronto almost escaped the 1st period with a lead,
but a mishandle behind the net by Frederik Andersen allowed Anton Lander to
take advantage of a wide open net at 19:29, tying the game.
The Leafs regained the lead when Ben
Smith received a great pass from Nikita Soshnikov behind the goal line to put
the puck through Cam Talbot 3:14 into the 2nd. Auston Matthews had a
number of quality chances in the period, but wasn’t able to convert on them.
Though a fast-paced game filled with young talent, the rest of the 2nd
was scoreless. Darnell Nurse tied the game at 2 with 11:22 remaining when his
point shot beat Andersen up high.
The game would require overtime to
decide. It only took 12 seconds for Nazem Kadri to win the game for the Maple
Leafs. Kadri scored his second goal of the game after stealing the puck from Connor
McDavid. He then outworked McDavid with his strength, skill, and determination
to go to the net and score.
