On This Day in NHL History (May 2)

Today marks the 49th anniversary of the Toronto Maple Leafs 1967 Stanley Cup victory. Not only was it the last time Toronto won the cup, it was also the last Stanley Cup championship of the Original Six Era. Toronto won in 6 games, beating the Canadiens at Maple Leaf Gardens. The Toronto cup drought is the longest current drought in the NHL. The New York Rangers hold the record for longest drought at 54 years. They finally broke through with their dramatic cup win in 1994 at Madison Square Garden.

The Leafs hope not to be the new record holder for longest drought. Fortunately, the Leafs won the 2016 NHL Draft lottery, and are expected to choose Auston Matthews first overall at the 2016 Draft in Buffalo. Hopefully, this will move them in the direction of another Stanley Cup championship within the next 5 years. With all kinds of young talent, the future appears bright in Toronto.
