2016 IIHF World Championship Results

Russia Dominates USA, Wins Bronze

Russia had a very convincing 7-2 win vs. USA to win the bronze medal at the IIHF World Championship tournament. Though USA lost, they exceeded expectations by making it as far as they did in the tournament. Their future also looks promising thanks to their development programs.
Pavel Datsyuk, who recently retired from the NHL, finished the afternoon with 3 assists. Russia took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission, with goals from Vyacheslav Voinov and Sergei Mozyakin. Russia continued to pour it on in the 2nd, and would enter the 3rd with a comfortable 5-1 lead. Frank Vatrano scored his 2nd goal of the game early in the period, but it was too late for a comeback. Russia would add two more goals and win the Bronze medal, much to the enjoyment of their home fans.

Canada Wins Gold

Canada beat Finland to win gold at the IIHF World Championship tournament. Connor McDavid scored what turned out to be the game-winner midway through the 1st period. Canada has now won IIHF gold 26 times in their history. Though Finland managed to keep the game close at 1-0, they were unable to find the equalizer. Matt Duchene guaranteed the win when he scored an empty net goal with a second remaining.
